South America - Characteristics
South America - a continent lying south and west hemispheres. The southern part of north America, the Isthmus of Panama, bordering with North America, bordered to the east with the Atlantic Ocean, and west to the Pacific Ocean.
South America is a continent with a considerable degree of
compactness. The average distance from the sea is here about 540 km,
a maximum around 1600 km. South America is a continent of
predominantly lowland areas, but in the west of the continent ran up
the Andes, which is an extension of the Cordilleras of North
America. The highest peak is Aconcagua in Argentina (6959 m) and the
lowest area is the area of Salinas Chicas (42 m below) on the Valdes
Peninsula. The greatest heights of South America is: Highland-browed,
Brazilian Highlands, Upland Plover, the lowlands are: Plain Orinoco,
the Amazon Plain, Plain Río de la Plata.
In South America there are all climatic zones ranging from
equatorial climate in the north of the continent through the
tropical, subtropical and temperate to subpolarnego south of the
continent. In terms of rainfall in South America are areas of heavy
rainfall (Lowland Amazon), but also the desert (in the Andes).
On the continent there are 12 independent states and one territory
dependent - French Guiana. In the immediate vicinity of the
continent are a group of islands (Falkland Islands, Galapagos
Islands, the Antilles, together with Trinidad and Tobago, Tierra del
Fuego), of which only some are independent, and the rest are
overseas territories of other countries.
